Things to Do in Singapore That Are Not Just Air-Conditioned Malls

Singapore is expensive, frictionless and easy to underestimate. Book nature and food. Gardens by the Bay is a paid spectacle. Sentosa is optional.

Singapore markets itself as a skyline and delivers a food system. The hawker centre is the national table. Gardens by the Bay is a greenhouse complex that happens to photograph like a planet. If you only do malls and the infinity-pool photo from a public deck, you missed the point.

Where to spend your money

Book: Cloud Forest, a hawker tour or a serious list of stalls, Night Safari or a ridge walk.

Skip: Sentosa by default, paid sky decks if you are happy with the promenade, and any "Instagram trail" that is just the Bay without the conservatory.

The part nobody tells you

Tipping is not expected. Service charge is often already on the bill in restaurants. Hawkers do not want extra coins as a performance. Queue, order, return the tray.

The 7 activities we would book in Singapore

Ranked by rating weighted against review volume, then filtered for free cancellation and honest itineraries.

1

Gardens by the Bay — Conservatories and Supertree Grove

The outdoor grove is free. The Cloud Forest is the ticket worth buying. Light show at night is free and crowded. Do Cloud Forest first, Marina Bay after dark.

  • Cloud Forest indoor waterfall
  • Flower Dome is skippable if you pick one
  • OCBC Skyway is extra and not required

Food & drink3 hours

Hawker centre food tour (not a rooftop)

Hawker centres are the reason Singapore is a food city. Maxwell, Old Airport Road or a neighbourhood centre beat any mall food court. A tour on day one teaches you how to order and what "the queue is the Michelin" actually means.

  • Several stalls, shared table
  • Hygiene grades are posted
  • Replaces a $60 tourist dinner

3

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark or a free bay walk

The SkyPark observation deck is a ticket if you are not staying in the hotel. The view from the bay promenade and Helix Bridge is free and 80 percent as good. Hotel guests get the pool, which is the actual icon.

  • Sunset if you pay
  • Promenade if you do not
  • Combo tickets with Gardens exist — run the numbers

4

Singapore Zoo or Night Safari — pick one

Night Safari is the distinctive product. Day zoo is excellent and hotter. Both are far north — budget travel time. Not a "quick stop."

  • Tram at Night Safari is the core
  • Book timed entry
  • Mandai is a half-day minimum

Walking tours3 hours

Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Gelam — one walking loop

These districts are the texture. A heritage guide earns it; a generic "photo spots" walk does not. MRT between them, do not taxi in a loop.

  • Sultan Mosque, Sri Mariamman, shophouses
  • Food inside the walk
  • Morning before the heat peaks

6

Sentosa — only if you want a theme park

Universal Studios and the beaches are a different holiday. If you came for a city, skip Sentosa. If you have kids or a theme-park day, book express passes in holiday periods.

  • USS sells out on weekends
  • Palawan and Siloso are beaches, not Bali
  • Cable car is optional scenery

7

MacRitchie Reservoir or Southern Ridges walk

Singapore's actual surprise is how much rainforest is in the city. Southern Ridges (Henderson Waves) is easy. MacRitchie canopy walk is hotter and better. A guide is optional; water is not.

  • Free without a guide
  • Weekday mornings
  • Monkeys — no food in hands

Singapore activities: common questions

How many days in Singapore?

Two full days for the city, three if Mandai or Sentosa. It is not a week unless it is a food-and-friends trip.

Is it as expensive as people say?

Hotels, alcohol and sit-down restaurants, yes. Hawker meals are still $5–8. Attractions are priced like theme parks. You can eat well without eating expensively.

Chewing gum and rules?

The clichés are overstated and also directionally true. Drugs are taken extremely seriously. Follow instructions in MRT cars. You will be fine if you are a normal adult.

Weather?

Hot, humid, rain in bursts. Indoor plans for 2–4pm. Umbrella daily.

Marina Bay vs Chinatown stay?

Marina Bay is views and prices. Chinatown, Tiong Bahru or Joo Chiat have more city. MRT makes both workable.
