About Explore Activities

A small, opinionated site about the one part of travel nobody has fixed: choosing what to actually do when you get there.

The problem

Flights and hotels got solved. You can compare every flight to Lisbon in about nine seconds. Then you land, open a booking platform, search “Lisbon tours”, and get four hundred results sorted by something nobody will explain to you. Half are the same tour resold under different names. The 4.8 rating comes from a thousand people who were asked to rate it before the disappointing part.

So people either book the first thing they see, or book nothing and spend the trip walking past things they would have loved.

What we do instead

Every destination page here is a shortlist, not a catalogue. Usually five to twelve activities, ranked, with a plain sentence about who each one is not for. We would rather cover fewer places properly than list every city on earth badly.

Three rules decide what makes the list:

  1. The bad reviews come first. A high average hides a lot. We read the one and two-star reviews looking for patterns — late pick-ups, groups three times the advertised size, “optional” extras that are not optional, itineraries that quietly drop the thing you booked for. One angry review is noise. Fifteen saying the same thing is a fact.
  2. The same tour, compared across platforms. Identical experiences are resold at different prices by different platforms. We link to the cheapest version that still has free cancellation.
  3. Somebody has to say skip it. If an attraction is genuinely a trap, or only worth it in one specific season, or exhausting with children, that belongs on the page. This is the whole reason the site exists.

How we pay for it

Affiliate commissions from booking platforms, and nothing else — no display ads, no paid placements, no sponsored listings. The price you pay is identical either way. We have written up the mechanics, including why it does not bend the rankings, on the affiliate disclosure page.

What we are not

We are not a booking platform. We hold no inventory, take no payments and cannot change or refund your booking — that is always between you, the platform and the operator. We are the research step before it.

Hold us to it

If we recommended something and you had a bad time, that is a bug and we want the report. If we are missing a destination you keep searching for, tell us and it moves up the queue. Either way: get in touch, or reach us directly at hello@exploreactivities.com.
