Prague is beautiful, cheap by Western Europe standards, and drowning in tours that are a pub crawl with a castle backdrop. Here is what is actually worth booking.

Prague's problem is not quality. It is density of substitutes. The castle is real, the river is real, the Jewish Quarter is a serious historical site. Then a layer of trdelik carts, "traditional" restaurants with laminated menus in eight languages, and free tours that end at a beer hall paying commission.

You do not need many bookings. You need the right castle ticket, a Jewish Quarter visit that includes the cemetery, and one meal plan that is not Old Town Square. Everything else is optional scenery.

Where to spend your money

Book: castle with St Vitus, Josefov, and either Kutna Hora or Bohemian Switzerland.

Skip: dinner cruises, beer spas unless you specifically want one, and any "ghost tour" on the Charles Bridge. The bridge at 6am is free and better.

The part nobody tells you

The Astronomical Clock apostles show lasts about 45 seconds and the crowd is a pickpocket's dream. Watch it once from the side, then go. The clock museum inside is skippable.

Prague activities: common questions

How many days in Prague?

Three full days. Two if you only want the castle and old town. Four if you add Bohemian Switzerland. The centre is compact; the day trips are not.

Is Prague expensive now?

Cheaper than Vienna or Munich, no longer the bargain of 2015. Old Town restaurants will charge Paris prices for worse food. Walk ten minutes into Vinohrady or Letna.

Cash or card?

Cards are widely accepted. Exchange offices on the main streets are still a scam — use an ATM from a real bank, or do not bother with koruna if your card has no foreign fee.

Trdelik — yes or no?

No. It is a Hungarian street pastry marketed as Czech. Eat palačinky or a proper koláč instead.

Night trains and stag parties?

Weekend old town can be loud and drunk. Stay in Mala Strana, Vinohrady or near Letna if you want sleep. It does not ruin the city; it ruins three streets.
