Istanbul is the rare city where public transport is a highlight. The ferry is not a cute extra. It is how the city makes sense — water, skyline, tea in a tulip glass, the other continent as a 20-minute habit.

Sultanahmet is a monument district. It is not where Istanbul eats or stays up late. Do the big buildings, then leave.

Where to spend your money

Book: current official tickets for Hagia Sophia and Topkapi (harem), a Kadikoy food walk, a Bosphorus hour that is not a dinner show.

Skip: Bazaar "workshops," Turkish night packages in a hotel ballroom, and any tour that spends more time in a leather shop than in a mosque.

The part nobody tells you

Cats are civic infrastructure. They are also not an activity. If someone is selling a "cat cafe tour of Istanbul," you already live in the cat cafe. It is called the street.

Walking tours of the bazaar often end in a partner workshop. Go alone, drink tea if you want, buy nothing you did not plan to buy. The Spice Bazaar is smaller and denser.

Istanbul activities: common questions

How many days in Istanbul?

Four. Two for Sultanahmet monuments, one for the Asian side and ferries, one for a neighbourhood (Balat, Karakoy, Kadikoy) without a checklist.

Lira and cards?

Cards are common in hotels and larger restaurants. Carry some lira for ferries, small eateries and tips. ATMs are everywhere — use a bank, not a gold-shop booth.

Museum Pass?

Check what Hagia Sophia and Topkapi currently require. The pass has been worth it in some years and not others. Re-read the official list for your week.

Safety and scams?

Standard big-city pickpockets in tram crowds. Shoe-shine and friendly game invitations near Sultanahmet. Taxi: use BiTaksi or Uber where it works, or the tram. Carpet shops are not dangerous, they are time sinks.

Mosque etiquette?

Covered shoulders and knees, women need a head covering (scarves are often lent). Prayer times can pause tourist entry. Shoes off. Do not treat a service as a photo set.
