Things to Do in Dubrovnik After You Pay the Wall Ticket

Dubrovnik is a walled town that sells out by 10am when the ships are in. Walk the walls at opening, get on a boat, and treat Game of Thrones as optional fan service, not a plan.

Dubrovnik's old town is a finite set of streets with a finite carrying capacity. The city knows this and prices accordingly. You get your money's worth by being on the walls before the ships, and on the water when the Stradun is unwalkable.

Eating inside the gates is a surcharge for the view of other visitors. Walk to the harbour end, or leave to Lapad, for dinner.

Where to spend your money

Book: walls at opening, a kayak or Lokrum, cable car if the wind is calm.

Skip: three-country tours, evening ghost walks on a 300-metre main street, and GoT if you do not already care.

The part nobody tells you

The "no cruise ships" days still exist in shoulder season and they change the town completely. If your dates are flexible, pick them. If not, run an island schedule around the port calendar like a local worker would.

The 7 activities we would book in Dubrovnik

Ranked by rating weighted against review volume, then filtered for free cancellation and honest itineraries.

1

City walls walk, first entry

Non-negotiable, and non-negotiable at 8am. By 11am with two cruise ships it is a queue in the sun on a two-metre walkway. Bring water, go clockwise, do the full circuit.

  • Two kilometres, no shade
  • Ticket also covers certain forts depending on the season bundle
  • Not a sunrise tour you need to pay extra for — just be there at opening

Water & boats3 hours

Lokrum island boat and monastery

The easiest escape from the old town crush. Regular boats from the old port. Peacocks, a dead-sea style swimming spot, and enough pine shade. Do not need a tour.

  • 10-minute boat
  • Swim, monastery gardens
  • Last boat back is real — miss it and you have a problem

Elafiti islands or kayak under the walls

Kayaking the walls is the angle that makes the city look like the poster. Morning, before the wind. Elafiti (Kolocep, Lopud) is the better full day if you want beaches.

  • Cave swim on some kayak routes
  • Life jacket, sun cream, shoes that can get wet
  • Cancel if the Jugo wind is up

Walking tours2 hours

Game of Thrones walking tour

Fun if you are a fan, filler if you are not. The filming locations are mostly "this staircase" with a tablet photo. Walk the walls instead if you must choose.

  • Jesuit staircase, Fort Lovrijenac
  • Two hours is enough
  • Skip the overpriced "VIP" versions

5

Mount Srd cable car

The view is the whole city and the islands. Go late afternoon. The restaurant is optional. Walking down is possible, walking up in July is a statement.

  • Sunset slot books up
  • War museum in the fort at the top if you like context
  • Wind can stop the cars — have a backup evening

Mostar day trip

A long day across a border for a famous bridge. Worth it if you have a spare day and want Bosnia, not if you only have three days in Dubrovnik. Border queues vary.

  • Stari Most, old town
  • Passport required
  • Better with a night in Mostar if you can

Cavtat or Peljesac wine, not a "three countries in one day"

Peljesac is where Dubrovnik's wine actually comes from. Montenegro-and-Bosnia mash-up days are a bus, three photo stops and a headache. Pick one country.

  • Dingac and Postup slopes
  • Lunch in a konoba
  • Sea views without old-town prices

Dubrovnik activities: common questions

How many days in Dubrovnik?

Two full days in the old town plus a boat day. Three if you add Mostar or Peljesac. One day is only the walls and a swim, and it will feel expensive.

Cruise ship days?

Look up the port schedule. When three ships are in, the Stradun is a queue. Walls at opening, island in the middle of the day, old town after 5pm.

Dubrovnik Card?

Useful if you will do walls, a museum or two and local buses/boats in 1–3 days. Do the arithmetic against the walls ticket alone — the walls are the expensive line item.

Is it too touristy?

The old town in July is a theme park with good walls. Stay in Lapad or Gruz, enter the gates for specific hours, leave. That is how it stays pleasant.

Game of Thrones — required?

No. Fort Lovrijenac is worth it as a fort. You do not need a house sigil.
