Athens has a reputation problem left over from the 2010s and a reality that is much better: a walkable centre, some of the best cheap food in Europe, and a hill that still stops people mid-sentence if they arrive before the cruise groups.
You are buying sequencing more than secrets. Timed Acropolis entry, the museum in the same half-day, then shade and food. The Agora is the site that makes the political history land, and almost nobody gives it enough time because they spent it queuing at the wrong hour on the rock.
Where to spend your money
Book: 8am Acropolis, the museum ticket, one food tour, and either Sounion at sunset or a single island — not Delphi and an island in the same trip unless you have a week.
Skip: hop-on buses in a city you can walk, "Athens by night" coach tours, and any shop that wants to show you a gold factory between sites.
The part nobody tells you
The changing of the guard at Syntagma is free, frequent and actually worth 15 minutes if you catch the Sunday 11am version with the full band. It is also surrounded by people treating it as a zoo. Stand back, do not block the marchers, and do not make it your "culture activity" in place of the Agora.
